IP address defined

IP stands for internet protocol and is an address consisting of numbers, separated by periods, that is assigned to you by your Internet Service Provider (ISP). It is used to identify your internet connection. They are also used for domain names on the web.

There are two types of IP addresses: IPv4 (e.g. 216.58.217.206) and IPv6 (e.g. 0:0:0:0:0:ffff:d83a:d9ce). IPv6 was developed due to the internet growing so fast that essentially, we were running out of numbers. IPv6 has allowed us to keep expanding, and new IP addresses can be assigned. With that being said, IPv4 addresses are still the most commonly used IPs on the web and with ISPs.
